Transparency, Integrity and Accountability

Gas Tax and Shipyards

Dear OurJax Members,

Over the past couple of weeks, OurJax has been asked if we plan to take positions on two large local issues being planned.

One is Mayor Lenny Curry’s proposal to double the local gas tax from 6 cents to 12 cents to fund $1 billion in road construction and maintenance. The second is the expected proposal by the Jacksonville Jaguars to develop the old Shipyards site, including building a Four Seasons Hotel on the former home of the Kids Kampus.

These two proposals can have large impacts on the future of Jacksonville.

As individual citizens, we have our own opinions. But when it comes to OurJax as an organization, our mission is to ensure all of the deliberations and decisions to be made by local officials are done with Integrity, Transparency, and Accountability.

OurJax will focus on the process used for decision making. Our voice is to make sure the rules are respected, policies and procedures are followed, and the community is engaged. We’ve learned with JEA and Lot J when those are ignored, the results will not enjoy public trust.

With your support and help, we are seeing evidence that OurJax has made a significant impact in how future public decisions in Jacksonville will be made.

For instance, OurJax is encouraged that in the early stages of proposing an increase in the local gas tax, the Mayor’s Office appears to be approaching this important issue in a manner that is more transparent.

In addition, we are learning that the Jaguars have pledged to be far more transparent in planning and proposing its Shipyards development with a commitment to follow all policies and procedures, including a thorough review by the Downtown Investment Authority.

Rest assured, OurJax will follow both of these proposals closely. We will be there to ask the tough questions and get the answers the community deserves.

As always, we are grateful for your support of OurJax and believing in Jacksonville.
